www.barkandwhiskers.com/2024-03-18-cigarette-smoke-cancer-risk-in-dogsStory at-a-glance A study involving Scottish terriers revealed many more insights into how environmental factors like cigarette smoke influence disease development The three-year study compared dogs that got bladder cancer and those that didn't, looking at different factors to see which ones increased the risk Dogs living with smokers were six times more likely to develop bladder cancer than dogs not living with smokers In households where humans smoke, dogs may be exposed to second-hand smoke from the cigarette and exhalations, as well as third-hand smoke made up of particular material that contaminates furniture, carpet and other household materials Cotinine, a nicotine metabolite, showed up in the urine of some dogs living with non-smoker owners, leading the scientists to suggest it may have been due to smoke residues on clothing My notes: Secondhand smoke can be worse because we don't get the filtered part of it. If you don't smoke, don't be around others who do. It can be hard if you are friends with them.

I seem to be fine despite being around second hand smoke, though wish I never was. I really wish the world ban it and then set up a system to give it to those who still need it (as quitting it is a pain and a half)

As for pets, it makes sense that they'll get cancers from second hand smoke too. I mean, pets are always cuddling people so they're probably closer than kids to smokers.

demonskeith, lammchen, Sometimes you won't know if you have a reaction until too late. Even if it's not cancer, some kids develop a cough or breathing problems. I'm sorry to hear that lammchen! Many of us grew up with second hand smoke so we will never know if we'd be susceptible to some type of cancer or disease. I think pets would get it faster because they are home all day & DO snuggle with their humans or at least lay around with them. Plus they have shorter lives so by the time they get diagnosed, they'd be elderly & treatments wouldn't be as ideal anymore.

I don't smoke. It's nasty. I grew up with parents and relatives who smoke. It was the in thing. Now we know better. I didn't realize the effects it could have on our pets.

And if you do, that it's one of the easier ones to fight where you just need surgery. For my two cancers, I only had to have surgery and no other treatment, but that's because I caught them early on. It's been 6 years now and there is no recurrence.

I haven't been around second hand smoke for a long long time. Me either. I don't visit people who smoke. I just cannot stand it.
